we are shop 28

Monday, October 30th, 2006

a while ago, this nice dude from the mount nelson hotel came by and said that they were making a brochure of kloof street for the guests.
he asked me to send him some pictures and publicity blurb and stuff, so i did.

then i forgot about it for a while.

check it: Kloof Street brochure [PDF, 295KB].
we are shop 28.
resistance is futile.

shiny!
this may be increasing our tourist trade.

i’ve had a few people point out that perhaps maybe possibly i look the tiniest bit like simon pegg from awesomely good uk tv series spaced.

then, this morning (in the dead zone between jo leaving for work and me leaving for work (about 3 hours. and many, many (*twitch*!) coffees)) i was watching some classic alan partridge.
i got to an episode called watership alan, which stars the aforementioned pegg.

his character’s name in the episode is…
steve bennett.
!

inspired by this, i’ve made a picture to prove that me and mr pegg look nothing alike.

me and simon pegg

i’m on the left.
no, wait…

man, i love living in cape town.
london never even smelled this good.

on saturday we did a few hours of work (ha!) in the shop, then went for a nice brisk stroll in the forest near our house. amazing how happy some exercise can make you feel : ).
then we toddled off for a braai. involving xbox 360s.

on sunday we did a few hours chilling, then decided to go hout bay for fish and chips.
saw some whales - woo!
southern right whales, apparently.
they look a tiny bit like this:
a whale, yesterday.
click to embiggen.

we went and sat on the moor-pier-thing by the beach and watched three whales lolling about.
then they came and said hello to us.
they were about 10m away - woo!
it looked a bit like this:
this is how it was
click the pic for a bigger one.
the dark blue dots are me and p, the light blue are the madding crowd.
the arrows indicate how it ‘went down.’ yo.
then the whales went back out to sea. perhaps to have some lunch.
then we toddled off for a braai. involving long island iced teas and naked, oiled men.

or
suggestions for surreal car rides.
volume 1.

take two half empty bottles of water (half full will also do).
Place one on the seat behind the driver.
Place the other in the footwell of the front passenger seat.

They will sploosh along happily as you drive, giving an aquarium feel to your car.

mmm… cape town
it’s so nice to be back.
i missed the mountain a lot while we were on hols.
i’m spending an ickle bit too much time staring at it and smiling while i’m driving…

the shop is going well and i’m being all productive and doing things that i’ve been putting off for ages.
this makes me happy (and apparently also a bit hyperactive).
now in preparations to receive wodge of stock that’s boating its way to CT as we speak - woo yay!

i’ve also had a nice number of visitors to the shop - cue wine / beer / food combos as appropriate.
schweet.

anyways, some ‘interesting’ ‘highlights’ from our holiday follow…

home

Sunday, October 8th, 2006

phew!
home safe and sound. :)
i had this nice warm mushy feeling as we were circling over cape town to land at the airport.
like: “mmm, home.”
fantastico welcome back drinks and foods courtesy of the doc and the evil landlord last night (thank you!), ending just before 8pm when we promptly left and got home just before we fell asleep.
tired + jet lag = zzzZZZ.

very interesting few days of travelling - details later.
i enjoyed the travelling and shopping lots but i missed my home!

also: small. red. vroom. woo!

stop go

yo.

kind of on our way home now.
shopping all done. delivering to shipping peeps not quite.

we’ve entered this odd period from now (thursday lunchtime here) until we get back to cape town (saturday lunchtime there) of alternating long-periods-of-hanging-around-waiting and bursts-of-frantic-activity.

today we’re crossing the border with about 100kgs of stone and silk to get on the night train.
ouch!
should be interesting…

tank update: still none.
was a festival carnival type thing last night along the river that had rows of official people doing body pat down searches, though.
hmm.

busy busy busy!

zoom!

left chiang mai thursday night, arrived bangkok friday morning.
tanks and soldiers still around, but very chilled.

ran around like mad people friday and saturday day buying more stock (silk scarvers and very, very pretty shell jewellery) and seeing friends Nat and Big before rocking up just on time for our night train to nong kai.

arriving this morning, spent an hour or two doing the border crossing (the number of steps and payments and things just to move from thailand to laos is amazering. the other way is way easier!) and are now happily installed in vientiane : ) .
laos rocks.

we’re here until thursday night when we jump on another night train and will arrive in bkk friday morning. we fly friday night. eep!

luckily, not much to do during the twelve hours or so we have there.
apparently, the new international airport is about an hour and a half outside of town. so, what with the drive and the two or three hour check-in for the flight, we’ll be leaving bkk town Early™.

next few days we’re buying stone stuff and many, many of the pretty silk scarvers and hanging devices.
muwahahaha!

naga customers please note that shiny pretty jewellery will be in the shop soon after we get back (give us a few days), but other stuff will take a month on the boat.
; )

also:
no tanks in laos.
lots of road digging heavy machinery, though.
